THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE - October 2009
CLUBHOUSE
As advised in my column in Pin High February 09 we had called for tenders based on a draft design of a refurbished clubhouse.
Drawings of this layout have been on display on the member’s notice board for some months. The club engaged an experienced quantity
surveyor to review the final three tenders, Madden and Associates, a Newcastle based firm with a strong reputation in the club industry. The
Board selected James Clifford Construction based on the recommendation of the quantity surveyor and the details presented to the Board.
These changes to the clubhouse will upgrade our facilities and allow us to continue to be an attractive venue for functions without
inconveniencing members. The selection is subject to the final cost quotation being acceptable to the Board. The Clifford Group has an
excellent record in the Club industry.
BOARD NOMINATIONS
Board nominations were well supported which is a great sign for the Club. The election will be by ballot and the voting papers will be
mailed to members with the Annual Report in early October. The election closes at 5pm on Saturday 14 November. The AGM will be held on
15 November 2009 at 5pm.
The nominations for the vacant positions are:
President: Ken Hey, John McFadden
Directors: Allan Arkins, Peter Crowder, Bruce Cummins, Deb McKenzie, Bernie Nash, Michael Nolan,
John Timmins.
All of these positions are for 3 years including myself where some confusion was raised by members. I think this may have arisen by the
announcement concerning the position of Captain. Warren Anderson has resigned effective from 15 November 2009 which is 1 year early and
therefore the position of Captain will be open for election again at the 2010 AGM. Colin Hines was the sole nomination for Captain and will
therefore be the Captain for the period commencing 15 November 2009 until the 2010 AGM.
PERFORMANCE
The Club has continued to trade better than in the past during the past 2 months and the future looks promising. The Board has be extremely
diligent in going forward and is united in ensuring the members are well served. Our staff have had a growing influence on the social atmosphere
which we hope will improve further with the planned improvements.
Regards to all.
John McFadden
President
GENERAL MANAGER'S MESSAGE
Members
Welcome to the October edition of Pin High. It is our intention to increase the content and regularity of Pin High to make it a more enjoyable and
informative read. It will now be published monthly and contain content regarding Golf, the Golf Course, the Golf Shop, clubhouse activities,
clubhouse refurbishment, financial performance and more.
ELECTION OF DIRECTORS
As you are probably aware it is currently election time for the Board of Directors. This year, under the Triennial System, John McFadden (President),
Allan Arkins (Director & Vice President) and Bruce Cummins (Director) have to vacate their positions. These three gentlemen are entitled to
re-stand for these positions and are, in fact, doing so. In addition to this the Captain, Mr Warren Anderson, has decided to stand down one year
earlier than his term entitlement. At the close of nominations Colin Hines stood unopposed as Captain and therefore will simply take over from
Warren as of the AGM. Candidates will be given an opportunity to address the members at the draw on Monday 12th October and Friday 16th October.
If John McFadden is elected as President Ken Hey remains on the Board as a Director as he still has 2 years remaining of his elected term. Under this
scenario only three (3) general director positions will be elected. If Ken Hey is elected as President then the top four (4) candidates standing for
general director positions will be appointed.
You all should be receiving your annual report and ballot papers momentarily.
FINANCES
The Club continues to trade strongly showing both revenue growth and efficiency increases. Traditionally, the first quarter of the financial year
generates a deficit that is then ‘clawed back’ over the peak summer period. Thus far we have managed to minimize this deficit giving
us an excellent launch pad for a successful trading year.

COURSE REPORT
New Turf Areas
The playing areas on the 2nd, 3rd, 15th and 17th tees and the 4th green surrounds have established well. The Couch grass surface will improve over the
next few months when the temperature increases and a light renovation is completed after the club championship.
4th Hole
The bunkers and turf will be in play for the Club Championships. The local rule will be used regarding free relief from seams of turf.
5th Hole Extension
Over the next couple of weeks, I will be marking with paint and pegs the start of the new 5th fairway. The design has the fairway further left than
the existing hole. At present, the time frame to start and complete this work is winter next year.
6th Green Surrounds & Bunkers
The reason for the re-construction of this area is:
The existing bunker edges and surrounds were shaped with dune sand prior to my employment. Although drainage was excellent, the native sand has a poor structure, resulting in the bunker edges being unstable and collapsing. The sand/soil that was excavated from the 12th bunkers was used to shape around the 6th bunkers. This will improve the soil structure and quality of the turf. The new design of the bunkers will reduce the amount of sand that is blown out due to strong winds compared to an open style bunker.
The surround on the right hand side of the green has been reshaped, as this will increase the area for carts and foot traffic. Drainage will be installed in this area to remove excess water.
The approach to the green has also been reshaped. The existing approach had a large mound that would direct the ball either to the left or right of the surround. The 6th hole as we know is right on the beach front, and the existing design encouraged the player to hit the ball up in the air and deal with the predominate wind of the day. The new design will enable a pitch and run shot to be played to keep the ball out of the wind if the player chooses.
New irrigation has been installed for the greens and surrounds. The control has been upgraded so the surrounds can be irrigated independently from the green. This along with the grass species Windsor green couch being used on the surround, we will see a major improvement in the playing surface.
The dune area was removed of Biteuo bush and other noxious weeds. This area will be rejuvenated with native plants that are taken from the site of the new 5th fairway and then transplanted where appropriate.
Tree Stumps
The stumps that are behind the 13th green and right hand side of the 7th will be removed over the next few weeks when staff constraints and budget allows. As stated previously, these areas will be re-planted.
Regards
Andrew Banning
Course Superintendent

Tip From The Pro
Having trouble chipping? Try putting with an 8 iron!!
Chipping Drill
Grab an 8 iron and set up the same as you putt but grab an 8 iron and set up the same as you putt but with the ball in line with your front heel. Lean your body forward until your nose and sternum are in line with the ball. Let the club swing up and fall down into the ball so it brushes the ground just in front of the ball. If you have trouble with the correct back swing plane place two balls 30cm behind the ball you intend to chip and swing the club back so it passes above the two balls.

Two Share 07 Pro Am Crown
Anthony Summers and David L. Partridge shot 3-under-par 68s to split the winner's cheque at the Central Coast
Express Advocate & Coca-Cola $10,000 Pro Am, held Friday at Tuggerah Lakes Golf Club.
Vicki Tutt was the best-placed female competitor with a 2-over-par 73. Martin Dive, Greg Green and Edward Stedman shared
third-place with 1-under-par 70s.
Open Amateur Stunner
TLGC member Stewart Creswick produced a stunning finish to overtake some of the state's best golfers and win the Tuggerah
Lakes Golf Club Open Amateur individual stroke event held Saturday, 8 September, 2007.
In a spectacular inward nine, Stewart eagled the par 5 15th, then after a solid par on the 16th carded consecutive birdies
on the 17th & 18th holes to post 1-under 69 and claim the coveted title from 2006 TLGC Junior Champion Dimi Papadatos
who finished on 72, with Danny An of Strathfield Golf Club one stroke further back.
Stewart's outward nine had plenty of highlights as well, among them a hole-in-one at the temporary 6th hole when his
approach to the 165-metre par 3 was never in doubt.
Long-time TLGC member Ron Ayton also finished well taking out the overall nett title with 71.
Woodward & Wehrle Triumph
Six-time club champion Brett Woodward (+1) and fellow A Grader Rodney Wehrle (4) proved too strong a combination against a top
field in this year's Foursomes Championship, held Sunday 26 August, 2007 at Tuggerah Lakes.
Woodward and Wehrle carded 4-under-par 138 to pocket the A Grade winner's cheque and trophy with Ron Ayton and Greg Nicholas
teaming well together for second. A Grade nett winners were the team of Andrew Arkins and Jason Henry, with Craig Chilvers
and Jack Danswan second.
David Allomes and Jamie Armstrong won B Grade, with Michael Duggan and Anthony Duggan winning the nett trophy. Francis Gore
and Hilton Cope claimed the C Grade scratch trophy, with Garry Walsh and Peter Costello (no, not that P Costello) taking
out the C Grade nett title.
Top Gun Winner
Sean Cameron overcame a top-class field of TLGC members to claim this year's Top Gun Shootout, held Sunday 4 February, 2007.
Sean, who plays off an 11 handicap, showed nerves of steel as his opponents, including defending champion and two-time
winner Ron Ayton, fell while his game went from strength to strength. Sean stormed home with birdies on 15 & 16,
and a par on 17.
Jamie Power said at the start of the shootout that he would be walking up the 18th, finished second.
