PIN HIGH NEWSLETTER - FEBRUARY 2010

THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE - February 2010

Members

Welcome to the February edition of Pin High. Whilst the Captain has reported on the events in detail I felt it necessary to offer my congratulations and thanks on behalf of the Board for the following:-

Top Gun Shootout
Congratulations to Mick Smith for winning the 2010 Top Gun Shootout. The Top Gun Shootout is a great annual event and plays a major part in our club’s social fabric. Galleries in excess of 200 people followed the event through out the day. Thanks must go to Alby Foskett as Chief Event Organiser, Ken Ryan of Coast & Country Insurance for his long term sponsorship of the event as well as PRD Realty for their support and the multitude of volunteers on the day.

Encourage Shield
Congratulations to George Crowder, Jack Ray, Rhys Pye, Ben Saunders, Zac Proctor, Ben Woodham, Sam Rochester and Tony White (Manager) for winning the Encourage Shield.
The great part about this outcome is not simply the victory but the pride and spirit displayed by this group of juniors throughout the whole event. The Junior Development Committee must be commended for this early success after implementing a new program in 2009 focusing on etiquette, camaraderie and club spirit. Particular thanks must go to both Judy and Neil Swanson and the band of Cadet Volunteers for their long term and ongoing efforts.

(Editor's Note: For more information about our cadets & juniors, please visit www.tlgcjuniors.com.au)

Building Update
Due to the Christmas New Year period there has been little progress in our Development Application since the last edition of Pin High. Our General Manager has posted further drawings of the clubhouse, including elevations, floor plans and suggested colour schemes. These can be found on the whiteboard in the lounge area and will soon be posted on a Building Specific Notice Board in the foyer area.
The Board will hold an information night in the near future and present the renovation project to members. We will communicate the day and time of this presentation as soon as it is scheduled.

Club Historian
In the last edition of Pin High the Board called for “Expressions of Interest” for the voluntary position of Club Historian. With the club rapidly approaching its 80th Anniversary and the clubhouse being refurbished this year there is no better time to compile our history, create a display and an archive for the preservation of relevant historical items. If you are interested in such a role please contact either myself or the General Manager.

Financials
The Club continued trading well in December despite being rain affected during our usually busy Christmas to New Year period. Carols by Schooner light was well patronized and is rapidly becoming an annual community event. Thanks must go to Alby Foskett, Gary Jackson, Keith Desmond and Denis Ratcliffe plus numerous other volunteers. Thanks also to Sharyn Kennedy, Loralie Taylor and the club staff.
The club has now set aside $750,000 over and above our working capital to contribute towards the refurbishment project. We expect to be able to increase this amount significantly after this year’s annual subscriptions are received.

The General Manager has provided an update to the Profit and Cash Flow Table below.

EBITDA is used to measure and compare the performance of a business without the impacts caused by financing decisions/structure, taxation issues and asset write off policies all of which can impact accounting profit. The General Manager informs me that trading during January has been comparable to last year so I look forward to bringing you further positive news on our progress next month.

CAPTAIN'S CORNER

With the festive season now behind us we can all settle back into playing golf. Our course has stood up well considering the amount of social players that have passed through over the last month, full credit goes to Andrew and his staff for keeping it in such good condition. There have been some good scores returned by some members since the last Pin High, Gary King 46pts on the 2nd; Geoff Leonard 71 gross on the 3rd; Mark Crowe and Jamie Dunsmore both returned +6 on the 16th, and Ian Lucock 45pts on the 19th.

The Top Gun Shootout final on 24th was another great success a crowd estimated at over 250 were treated to some excellent golf by the 19 finalists, with the eventual winner being Mick Smith from last year's winner Brett Parker. Mick had to go through three chip offs during the course of his round and he played very steady golf.

This year's Pennants kicked off on Sunday 31st and our players are all looking forward to a good showing. We wish them all the best and hopefully they can get the Sterland Shield back for us.

Our annual Australia Day Commemorative medal day on the 26th saw a field of 186 men & 49 ladies tee off. There were some very good scores and the winners were:

Ladies
Div 1
Nic Mountfort 38pts
Div 2
Carol Raberg 36pts

Mens
A Grade
Neil Coombs 41pts C/B
B Grade Allen Western 44pts
C Grade Steven McDonald 37pts

and the junior winner with an excellent score of 44pts was Ben Saunders, each winner will receive an engraved medal.

Juniors Win Encourage Shield

encourage shield victors
Left to right - Ben Woodham, Ben Saunders, Jack Ray, Sam Rochester, Rhys Pye, Zac Proctor, George Crowder with Team Manager Tony White

The best news of the month was the Encourage Shield Team winning the Shield at Everglades on the 25th. The team members were George Crowder, Jack Ray, Rhys Pye, Ben Saunders, Zac Proctor, Ben Woodham & Sam Rochester, the manager was Tony White. For a team that was rushed together two weeks prior to their first match and none of them playing matchplay before they have certainly done our club proud. Tony said they were all exceptionally well behaved and played their matches in the right spirit. With this win they now go on to play in Sydney towards the end of this year in the State finals knockout.

2009 ELECTION RESULTS

Following the election of directors at the 2009 Annual General Meeting some members have requested clarification regarding the terms of each of the directors that were elected.

Under the constitution of the TLGC the ‘triennial rule’ applies to the election of directors. Under this rule 3 of the 9 directors are required to retire each year and the newly elected directors then serve for a period of 3 years. Any further directors elected to fill casual vacancies are elected for the residue of the term of the person who caused the casual vacancy. Some confusion has arisen this year, as the term ‘casual vacancy’ has not been defined in the constitution.

At a recent board meeting the provisions of clause 3 of the constitution were used to define a casual vacancy as ‘any vacancy that has arisen other than by the retirement of a director at the annual general meeting under the triennial rule’. Further it was decided that directors’ terms would be based on the number of votes received.

In 2009 six directors positions were filled, 3 under the triennial rule, one to fill the casual vacancy created by the early retirement of the captain and two casual vacancies created by the elevation of current directors to higher positions.

Under these provisions the following directors were elected for the following terms:

President: Ken Hey. 3 years. Triennial Rule
Captain: Colin Hines. 1 year. Captain retired. Residue of term
Director: Alan Arkins. 3 years. Triennial rule
Director: Bruce Cummins. 3 years. Triennial rule
Director: Michael Nolan. 2 years
Ken Hey casual vacancy. Residue of term
Director: John Timmins. 1 year.
Colin Hines. Residue of term

MOANERS NEWS

Tuggerah Lakes Early Moaners are continuing to attract in excess of 80 players each Sunday Morning. The interest in the Moaners is shown by the fact that there are in excess of 50 members of Tuggerah Lakes Golf Club on the waiting list to also join the Moaners.

Moaners should note the following important dates.
(1) February 20 2010 which is the Annual Presentation/Dinner Dance.  As the list is nearly full  - the cut off date for payment of monies is very important.  If you are not paid by the due date your table spot may be offered to another Moaner.  See Notice Board for details.
(2)  The Annual General Meeting of the Moaners is on Monday March 8 2010 and all members should check the notice board for details and nominations for Committee.  Remember if you wish to submit a Notice of Motion for tabling at the AGM it must be in the hands of the Secretary one month prior to the AGM.
(3)  Payment of Annual Fees are due and payable by 6.30pm on March 8 2010.  Don’t be late with your payment as there are plenty on the waiting list.

The Moaners Club provided approximately 33% of the Top Gun Shootout field with the final shootout coming down to 4 of our own - Dean Goodman, Bruce Wilson and the final battle between Brett Parker and Mick Smith. Congratulations to Mick Smith for his steady performance throughout the day and to all participants in this years event.

Moaners please remember if you are not directly behind the group in front of you – you are playing too slow and need to catch up ASAP.  This makes the game so much more enjoyable for all out there on a Sunday morning.

COURSE REPORT

Due to the refurbishment of the clubhouse, a new 9th hole will be constructed in the future when the Board of Directors permits. In the mean time, the existing nursery green on the practise fairway will be used to replace the 9th hole, along with a new tee which is currently being constructed. The distance of this par 3 will be 143m.

When the construction of the clubhouse begins, the new order of holes will be from the 8th hole to the 10th hole and the substitute hole (9th which is located on the practise fairway) will be played after the 16th hole and then you will proceed to the 17th hole.

In the future when the permanent 9th hole is built in front of the clubhouse, the temporary hole will be used as a practice facility and spare hole.

Over the next few months, native areas around the course will be rejuvenated by the way of planting and mulching. These areas include:

 Around the sand dune area behind the 1st green and right hand side of the 18th men’s tee.
 Right hand side of the 2nd and 6th tees.
 Right hand side of the 6th and 7th greens.
 Left hand side of the 11th tee and green.
 Around the men’s and ladies 12th tees.
 Left hand side of the 17th tee.
 Around the temporary 9th tee on the practise fairway.

The marking of carpark spaces will begin in the next couple of weeks.

The re-claimed water pipe that feeds into the 4th dam will be re-directed in the coming weeks. The pipe will angle towards the pump shed but will remain on the eastern side of the dam. The water will then run between rocks and plants to strip the water of undesirable Cations and Anions like Sodium, Phosphate and Bicarbonate. This job will be carried out by TLGC staff.

The Christmas and New Year period has seen a rise in vandalism this year with the majority of the damage committed on the 5th green.

A common question I have received of late is "Why is the 5th green slower than the rest of the greens?". The reason is simple. The height of cut has to be raised after major damage, due to the surface being uneven. The process of repair is as follows: The damaged turf pieces are replaced back in their position. These areas are then rolled and topdressed with sand. The next cut they receive is at a higher height due to the uneven surface and to allow the grass to grow thru the sand. The sand particles are very abrasive and will damage the cutting cylinders. This is why the height of cut is slowly lowered over a period of time to eliminate scalping of plant and picking up of the sand. This green has only been cut at the desirable height 3 times this spring and summer. This is why this green has been of less pace than the rest of the greens.

Joke of the Month
A beginner golfer asked the Golf Pro "Is the word spelt P-U-T or P-U-T-T?” The Pro replied "put means to place a thing where you want it but a putt is merely a vain attempt to do the same thing!!!"

Tip from the Pro
So many players report that they had a great front nine but failed to continue and did not play well the back nine. Does this sound like you?

Try these simple tips that are used by good players all the time:

 Don’t add the scores up after 9 holes, wait for the end of the round;
 Try to feel freer and more relaxed as you get to the 18th;
 Focus on the moment and not on the winner's cheque;
 Don't take extra time than you normally would just because you’re playing well.
