THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE - February 2009

December and January have been very successful both in the club and on the course.  We are most grateful to our staff and to the catering staff for the tremendous effort and spirit they all displayed during one of our most hectic periods on record. Well done everyone.

The course has stood up to the traffic load extremely well and at the end of the holiday season was in the best condition we have seen for that time of the year.  As we have said before if the playing members take care on the course then the visitors do eventually follow suit.

Strategic Plan

The Board held a one day session at the end of January to consider our plan to go forward over the next 5 years and to review the current position against the plan drawn up in January 06. The main conclusions were:

The main project of building a new clubhouse and generating funds by development of our site remains the main objective. We are very dependent on government authorities on progress of this plan and as you know it is taking much longer than we had anticipated and we are becoming frustrated at the lack of effort by the authorities in helping us secure our future.

We can see the new clubhouse taking another 3 to 5 years and whilst we will continue to pursue this plan, we will be making changes to the club house to upgrade some of our outdated facilities and lounge area for members with a better view than we presently get when functions are on.

Rearrange and refurbish the club house to take better advantage of our unique location.

Bar facilities will be upgraded both upstairs and downstairs to allow more efficient service.

Obviously the above can only be done when funds are available and we are about to commence drawing up the plans of these changes and obtaining quotes. Further information and drawings will be made available for members perusal and comment.

On the course it was decided:

* That we proceed with moving the green shed to the northern end of the course when necessary either for development or when the noise issue becomes a major problem.
* Install the 5th tee as previously approved.
* Review the course layout to decide what further changes, if any, are made.

In order to get a further update on members opinion we will prepare a survey questionnaire and seek input from all members on various matters relating to the future of the club.

You would have read in a recent newspaper that up to 90 golf courses are in financial difficulty but we are pleased to say that we are maintaining an even balance and are obviously doing better than most other golf clubs. We have closed membership for now and have a membership waiting list who all pay the joining fee to get on the list. They will be admitted as vacancies become available.

We still are accepting lady golfers with not more than 50 to reach the cut off point for ladies.

We are restricted in the number of golfing members we can have because under our lease we must allow the public to use the course at least one third of daylight hours.

Finally we will be discussing further possibilities of purchasing more of the lease land for the new clubhouse or other uses and longer term alternative developments on our land.  These moves will be very much dependent on the source of funds.

My personal thanks to the Board for a brain taxing day and review of the Strategic Plan and to Craig for bringing together the data required to properly consider the future.

Regards to all, trust the weather cools down soon.

General Manager's Report

Members,
Whilst the introduction of the Refreshments Cart has not been popular in all quarters of the membership base it has improved the financial performance of both the bottom bar and the Golf Shop via redistribution of income and more efficient amortization of wage costs. Other than a couple of teething problems the pace of play has also improved over the peak period where we are dealing with fields of 225+ players. Your Board has now taken the steps of securing the bottom bar so that it may be opened for access to the men’s amenities and seating is available for a brief break between holes 9 & 10. This should be available in the next two weeks. I ask you all to please minimize this stop in order to maintain the improvements that have been made in the pace of play. The Ladies Locker Room will be opened on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Mondays when the Ladies Vets are playing. The Pro Shop Amenities will also be cleaned at approximately midday on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for your convenience.

The Board has also asked me to apply to extend the club’s liquor license to incorporate the course. This will ensure 100% compliance for various events such as Carols by Schooner Light, the Top Gun Shoot Out and many others. Of course this will also allow the club to sell alcohol from the refreshments cart during competitions and corporate days. Please be patient as this process will take some time.

Thanks and Good Golfing.

Two Share 07 Pro Am Crown

Anthony Summers and David L. Partridge shot 3-under-par 68s to split the winner's cheque at the Central Coast Express Advocate & Coca-Cola $10,000 Pro Am, held Friday at Tuggerah Lakes Golf Club.

Vicki Tutt was the best-placed female competitor with a 2-over-par 73. Martin Dive, Greg Green and Edward Stedman shared third-place with 1-under-par 70s.

Open Amateur Stunner

TLGC member Stewart Creswick produced a stunning finish to overtake some of the state's best golfers and win the Tuggerah Lakes Golf Club Open Amateur individual stroke event held Saturday, 8 September, 2007.

In a spectacular inward nine, Stewart eagled the par 5 15th, then after a solid par on the 16th carded consecutive birdies on the 17th & 18th holes to post 1-under 69 and claim the coveted title from 2006 TLGC Junior Champion Dimi Papadatos who finished on 72, with Danny An of Strathfield Golf Club one stroke further back.

Stewart's outward nine had plenty of highlights as well, among them a hole-in-one at the temporary 6th hole when his approach to the 165-metre par 3 was never in doubt.

Long-time TLGC member Ron Ayton also finished well taking out the overall nett title with 71.

Woodward & Wehrle Triumph

Six-time club champion Brett Woodward (+1) and fellow A Grader Rodney Wehrle (4) proved too strong a combination against a top field in this year's Foursomes Championship, held Sunday 26 August, 2007 at Tuggerah Lakes.

Woodward and Wehrle carded 4-under-par 138 to pocket the A Grade winner's cheque and trophy with Ron Ayton and Greg Nicholas teaming well together for second. A Grade nett winners were the team of Andrew Arkins and Jason Henry, with Craig Chilvers and Jack Danswan second.

David Allomes and Jamie Armstrong won B Grade, with Michael Duggan and Anthony Duggan winning the nett trophy. Francis Gore and Hilton Cope claimed the C Grade scratch trophy, with Garry Walsh and Peter Costello (no, not that P Costello) taking out the C Grade nett title.

Top Gun Winner 07

Sean Cameron overcame a top-class field of TLGC members to claim this year's Top Gun Shootout, held Sunday 4 February, 2007.

Sean, who plays off an 11 handicap, showed nerves of steel as his opponents, including defending champion and two-time winner Ron Ayton, fell while his game went from strength to strength. Sean stormed home with birdies on 15 & 16, and a par on 17.

Jamie Power said at the start of the shootout that he would be walking up the 18th, finished second.
