PIN HIGH NEWSLETTER - DECEMBER 2009

THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE - December 2009

Members
Welcome to my first Pin High article as President.
Firstly I would like to convey my thanks to those who saw fit to vote for me in our recent elections. I can assure you that I am very passionate about our great club and, with the support of our Board and Management, will endeavor to provide you the members with continually improved amenities and services.
Secondly, I want to pass on my thanks to both John McFadden and Warren Anderson for their commitment and service to our club over the last decade. The measured improvement and investment in our course along with the quality and quantity of competitions and events are a testament to their knowledge and efforts over this time. These two men have also lead our club into the solid financial position in which we find ourselves. This has provided us with choices for our future that were not available previously.

Board Structure
Our newly formed Board have one meeting under our belts. After some discussion your new Board is structured as follows:

President: Ken Hey
Vice President: Allan Arkins
Captain: Colin Hines
Vice Captain: Mike Nolan
Treasurer: Jeff Chapman
Match Representatives: Colin Hines & Mike Nolan
Greens Representatives: Garry Craig & Bruce Cummins
House Representatives: Warren Hadley & John Timmins
Finance Representatives: Jeff Chapman & Allan Arkins

In my role I am ex-officio on all committees. Remember, these people represent you the members so if you have questions or issues please speak to the relevant director or alternatively go directly to our general manager. One of my goals as president is to improve the flow and availability of information to members.

Building Project
Project meetings with Clifford’s (Builders) and Madden’s (QS & Project Managers) continue. The final design layout is all but complete. There is currently a draft set of plans on display in the foyer above the Blue Phone. Remember, these plans may change slightly but are very close to the final design. It is our intention to provide members with a larger set of plans once the final design is signed off as well as information about our borrowing intentions and cash flow projections for the project. Our Banking representatives are attending a Board Meeting in December and our Treasurer is currently compiling financials with our GM (Craig) and Accountant (Alison). This first step will be comprehensive as we need to invest in the "engine room" of the clubhouse to cope with growth over the next decade and beyond. At present the project is timetabled for the beginning of April and will take 26 to 30 weeks to complete.

Financials
Craig has provided me with the Profit and Cashflow Table that we have published in the last few editions of Pin High. I have had a few questions from members about this table. What needs to be understood is that our club’s major cash movements and accounting profits occur at different times of the year. We receive almost 100% of our member’s subscriptions in June and July each year but cannot realize this as income in one hit. This income is brought to account each month after the club has provided you the members with the obligations we have for your membership. Our best trading months for accounting profit occur over the spring/summer period. What you need to read into the table below is that last years financial performance was very good and this year, so far, we are outperforming last year.

The General Manager has provided an update to the Profit and Cash Flow Table below.

Profit Table

Month Actual Budget Last Year
July $5,614.72 ($25,880.82) ($20,130.87)
August ($7,938.55) ($38,876.73) ($42,617.74)
September $1,039.55 ($7,817.79) ($30,669.21)
October $20,027.62 ($3,667.11) $46,624.84
YTD $19,060.93 ($72,575.34) ($46,792.98)

Cashflow Table (EBITDA)

Month Actual Budget Last Year
July $32,688.72 $7,083.18 $7,244.13
August $24,173.45 ($5,912.73) ($14,937.74)
September $31,475.39 $22,378.88 ($3,919.26)
October $50,079.16 $27,119.56 $73,642.70
YTD $138,416.72 $50,668.89 $62,029.83

Note: EBITDA = Earnings Before Interest Tax Depreciation and Amortisation. EBITDA is a widely used financial calculation. EBITDA is used to measure and compare the performance of a business without the impacts caused by financing decisions/structure, taxation issues and asset write off policies all of which can impact accounting profit. EBITDA is an approximate representation of the company’s Cash Flow.

I understand that this information is quite complex. Craig has stated that he is happy to discuss/explain this to members should they be interested.

I would like to wish all members a happy and safe festive season. I would also like to request members consider not playing golf between 28th December and the 31st December as these four days always result in considerable revenue for the club.

Ken Hey
President

CAPTAIN'S CORNER

I am looking forward to representing the members as your Club Captain over the next 12 months, it will be a learning period for me. With the resignation of our previous Captain, Warren Anderson, I have a big act to follow as Warren did a magnificent job whilst in the position. I don’t believe anyone would question whether Warren Anderson’s heart was in the job.

I have a very capable Vice Captain in Mike Nolan, he is a very well accredited rules man and has an excellent knowledge of the game. Mike and I will be writing a column in Pin High each month keeping members informed of important events coming up together with any outstanding scores between monthly issues. The one for this issue is the excellent win by our Challenge Shield at Toukley on Sunday 22nd November. The Team was made up of Mark Bunter (A Grade), Robert Whitehall (B Grade), Jamie Maher (C Grade), Maralyn Armstrong (Div. 1), Margaret Marjoram (Div. 2) and Annette Kneipp (Div. 3). TLGC has been very successful over the years and we congratulate our Challenge Shield Team on their success.

Our annual Christmas Gala Day is on Saturday the 19th of December. The format will be an AM and PM Shotgun Start followed by a sit down meal after each session. Members are encouraged to dress for the occasion. There will be a good variety of prizes including Ham, Turkey, Christmas Cakes, Nuts & Wine. Special Prizes will be for Longest Drive on the 3rd hole and Nearest to the Pin on ALL Par 3’s. It will be a great day so don’t forget to mark it in your diary and get your name down to play.

Pennants will be commencing on 31st January 2010 and will continue for 5 consecutive Sundays finishing on February 28th. The final will be held on Sunday March 14th. The nomination sheet is on the notice board outside the Golf Shop. Presently we require more people for A Grade and Juniors. Anybody interested who can commit to the 5 weeks are invited and encouraged to put their name down. Teams will be selected by the 16th of December to enable us to have shirts ordered and embroidered.

Starting from the next edition of Pin High, Mike & I will be explaining a Golf Ruling. So, if you come across a situation whilst playing and want us to research and publish a ruling either talk to Mike or myself or alternatively put it in writing to the General Manager (email Craig Ellis).

In the mean time: Good Golfing and remember to keep your head down!

Col Hines
Captain

COURSE REPORT

6th Green surround
The construction has been completed and only the finishing touches of mulching around the native grasses and shrubs are left to do. The entire area will be open for play when the turf on the right hand side of the green matures over the next few weeks.

9th Hole
Due to the clubhouse renovations, a new 9th hole will be constructed. The tees will remain in the same position with the green being in front of the clubhouse on the practise fairway. The hole will measure from 120 metres to a maximum of 160meters to the middle of the green. The construction time table has not been finalized.

Fairway Renovation
The fairway renovation of scarifying and coring will improve the playing surface along with improving the infiltration and peculation rates of water movement. This means that during wet weather, the fairways will depose of the excess water faster, resulting in less down time on carts.

Couch grass Renovations
The couch tees on holes 2, 3, 6, 15, 17 will be cored, fertilized and top dressed over the coming weeks. Also the new turf on the 4th and 6th green surrounds will be fertilized and top dressed. This procedure will improve these areas dramatically.

Pathways
New paths will be installed on holes 10, 13 and 18 when the program permits.

10th Hole- The concrete tee path will be extended as well as a ¼ minus green path and parking bay on the left hand side. A ¼ minus path will also be installed to transport traffic to the footpath in front of the 13th tee.

13th Hole- A ¼ minus path will be located on the left hand side of the tee as you play. Native shrubs and grasses will be planted to protect players from incoming golf balls from the 10th hole.

18th Hole- A ¼ minus path will transport traffic from the front of the men’s tee to the back of the ladies tee. Native shrubs and grasses will also be planted around this path.

Regards
Andrew Banning
Course Superintendent

Golf Quotes of the Month
"Real golfers go to work to relax." - George Dillion
"I don't care to join any club that’s prepared to have me as a member." - Groucho Marx
"Never bet with anyone you meet on the 1st tee who has a deep suntan, a 1 iron in his bag and squinty eyes." - Dave Marr

Tip From The Pros
The key to consistent driving is unfortunately not an interesting topic nor is it a pro secret. The answer is good golf fundamentals. Quite often I see players working on their body, arms or club action when these things mostly take care of themselves when we’ve got the basics correct. Follow the checklist:
• Alignment (Feet aimed slightly left of the target),
• Ball position (Just inside the left heel)
• Grip (2/3 Knuckles showing on your top hand)
If you still can’t hit it past your mates then see Jason and Peter in the Golf Shop for a driving lesson.

Rule of the Month
Q: A player plays out of the sand but fails to escape the bunker advancing the ball to another section of the bunker. Can the player rake up that lie before playing the next shot?
A: Yes, as long as they are not close enough towards their next lie as to be regarded as testing the sand for their next shot. This is a new rule by the R & A, introduced to speed up pace of play. See Rule 13-4.

Two Share 07 Pro Am Crown

Anthony Summers and David L. Partridge shot 3-under-par 68s to split the winner's cheque at the Central Coast Express Advocate & Coca-Cola $10,000 Pro Am, held Friday at Tuggerah Lakes Golf Club.

Vicki Tutt was the best-placed female competitor with a 2-over-par 73. Martin Dive, Greg Green and Edward Stedman shared third-place with 1-under-par 70s.

Open Amateur Stunner

TLGC member Stewart Creswick produced a stunning finish to overtake some of the state's best golfers and win the Tuggerah Lakes Golf Club Open Amateur individual stroke event held Saturday, 8 September, 2007.

In a spectacular inward nine, Stewart eagled the par 5 15th, then after a solid par on the 16th carded consecutive birdies on the 17th & 18th holes to post 1-under 69 and claim the coveted title from 2006 TLGC Junior Champion Dimi Papadatos who finished on 72, with Danny An of Strathfield Golf Club one stroke further back.

Stewart's outward nine had plenty of highlights as well, among them a hole-in-one at the temporary 6th hole when his approach to the 165-metre par 3 was never in doubt.

Long-time TLGC member Ron Ayton also finished well taking out the overall nett title with 71.

Woodward & Wehrle Triumph

Six-time club champion Brett Woodward (+1) and fellow A Grader Rodney Wehrle (4) proved too strong a combination against a top field in this year's Foursomes Championship, held Sunday 26 August, 2007 at Tuggerah Lakes.

Woodward and Wehrle carded 4-under-par 138 to pocket the A Grade winner's cheque and trophy with Ron Ayton and Greg Nicholas teaming well together for second. A Grade nett winners were the team of Andrew Arkins and Jason Henry, with Craig Chilvers and Jack Danswan second.

David Allomes and Jamie Armstrong won B Grade, with Michael Duggan and Anthony Duggan winning the nett trophy. Francis Gore and Hilton Cope claimed the C Grade scratch trophy, with Garry Walsh and Peter Costello (no, not that P Costello) taking out the C Grade nett title.

Top Gun Winner

Sean Cameron overcame a top-class field of TLGC members to claim this year's Top Gun Shootout, held Sunday 4 February, 2007.

Sean, who plays off an 11 handicap, showed nerves of steel as his opponents, including defending champion and two-time winner Ron Ayton, fell while his game went from strength to strength. Sean stormed home with birdies on 15 & 16, and a par on 17.

Jamie Power, who said at the start of the shootout that he would be walking up the 18th, finished second.
